How VA Rates Hearing Loss
The VA rates hearing loss using a mechanical, objective formula outlined in 38 CFR § 4.85. It considers two factors from a controlled clinical audiometric evaluation:
- Puretone audiometry thresholds at 1000, 2000, 3000, and 4000 Hz for each ear
- Controlled speech discrimination (Maryland CNC word list) percentage for each ear
These values are mapped through Table VI (or Table VIa if speech discrimination testing is not appropriate) to determine a numeric designation (Level I through XI) for each ear, then cross-referenced in Table VII to determine the disability percentage.
