How do I add dependents to my VA disability compensation?

Last verified August 1, 2026 · Reviewed by Esteban Magallon, VA-Accredited Claims Agent

    Details

    • Below 30% combined, no dependent allowance is payable.
    • VA Form 21-686c: add or remove a spouse, child, or report a divorce or death.
    • VA Form 21-674: continue benefits for a child aged 18–23 who is attending school full time.
    • Failing to report a divorce or a child aging out creates an overpayment that VA will recover.
    • A helpless child (permanently incapable of self-support before age 18) can remain a dependent indefinitely with medical evidence.
