Q: How is VA disability back pay calculated?

Back pay (retroactive benefits) runs from the effective date of the award to the date VA starts paying. The effective date is generally the date VA received your intent to file or the claim itself under 38 CFR § 3.400, whichever is earlier. Back pay equals the monthly rate for the awarded percentage multiplied by the number of full months between effective date and payment.
