How does the VA rate sleep apnea?

Last verified August 1, 2026 · Reviewed by Esteban Magallon, VA-Accredited Claims Agent

    Details

    • 0%: asymptomatic but with documented sleep disorder breathing.
    • 30%: persistent day-time hypersomnolence.
    • 50%: requires use of a breathing assistance device such as CPAP.
    • 100%: chronic respiratory failure with CO2 retention, cor pulmonale, or requires tracheostomy.
    • Sleep apnea is very commonly claimed as secondary to service-connected PTSD, rhinitis/sinusitis, asthma, or weight gain caused by a service-connected condition.
    • VA has proposed respiratory schedule revisions in recent rulemaking; any change applies as published in the Federal Register and cannot reduce an existing rating protected by law.
