Q: What is a nexus letter and do I need one?

A nexus letter is a written medical opinion from a qualified provider stating whether a current condition is 'at least as likely as not' caused or aggravated by military service. It is one piece of evidence VA considers when a claim requires medical linkage. You do not always need a private nexus letter — the C&P examiner's opinion, in-service treatment records, and STR evidence often supply the nexus on their own.

A nexus letter is most useful when a C&P exam is unfavorable, when the condition is presumptive but VA is questioning it, or when a secondary connection isn't obvious.
